I usually purchase a Philips dvd player because they are easy to unlock (play dvds from all regions) but I got tired of replacing them as they usually lasted 1-2 years only. I decided to pay a little more and try this one from Pioneer. After reading reviews here, I was prepared to "unlock" this player as well, if needed. I am happy to report that this played dvds from any region, straight out of the box from a third party seller. br /br /The controller is scary light and slightly bigger then my old one but most importantly, contains a subtitle button. I like to have direct access to subtitles when watching foreign films and other brands do not always include this. I have had no problems with the performance of the controller or the player after a few weeks of heavy use. The dvd player does keep your spot in a movie in case you need to turn it off or even exchange dvds. I am not sure how long it holds place in the memory but I continued to play a dvd 3 days later and it started in the spot I left off. Love that feature. br /br /This player has played any dvd I have thrown at it - smudged rental dvds or even copies. I have tried Region 2/PAL (UK) and Region 0 (all regions) as well as Region 1 (US Canada) and they all played without problems. I will second another reviewer's point about the flimsy disc tray. When placing a dvd into the tray, you can feel how flimsy it is and it looks like it could break but so far so good. Also, it takes a while for the player to get up and running (20-45 seconds) but most players have this issue. A handful of times, the player has made a slight whirring sound when playing an older dvd and this noise easily got lost in the movie itself. All of these things are minor when compared to the rest of its features and price. br /br /If you are looking for a reasonably priced dvd player that will play all regions, I highly recommend this one. br /br /br /br /

This product sucks and don't buy from New Era Products - Julie Cho - brooklyn, ny
From the beginning, this DVD player hummed. I was able to reduce the noise by adjusting some settings. Two months into owning it, it stopped working. Pioneer doesn't want to take responsibility for fixing it (and it takes forever to reach a live person) and New Era Products gave lame response, "Please contact manufacturer so they can troubleshoot."
